EVENT OVERVIEW
The Raise the Barre Dance Convention is a two-day dance experience designed to provide both professional and emerging artists with meaningful opportunities within the dance industry as well as dancers to opportunity to work with industry professionals.
This event brings together established choreographers and up-and-coming artists to:
- Provide paid working opportunities for choreographers
- Offer dancers access to industry-level training
- Create performance opportunities for selected dancers
- Support the next generation of choreographers
Selected dancers will participate in the workshops over the weekend and have the opportunity to perform in a small group piece (dancers are selected by choreographers) and may be selected to feature in the “Minute to Win It” solo challenge adjudicated by a panel of guest choreographers.

AGE CATEGORIES
- Juniors: 12 years C Under
- Seniors: 13+ years
WORKSHOP INFORMATION
- All dancers must hold a valid 2-day convention pass and wear the wristband provided over the 2 days
- Dancers are required to arrive early and be prepared for each session
- Dancers are required to be dressed appropriately and have correct footwear for each
- Respect for choreographers and fellow dancers is expected at all times
MINUTE TO WIN IT – SOLO CHALLENGE
Selection Process
- Each choreographer will select 1 dancer from each workshop across both days
- Selected dancers will compete in the “Minute to Win It” solo challenge on Day 2 evening
Requirements
- All dancers must wear an audition number during the workshops should they wish to be considered for selection
- Dancers wishing to be considered must:
- Have a 1-minute solo prepared, any genre
- Have a costume and stage make up ready for performance
- Music to be emailed to hello@raisethebarre.com.au clearly labelled with name and routine.
Selection Rules
- If a dancer is selected for a solo, dancers must remove their wrist band for subsequent workshops as they will not be eligible for further selection for solos.
- Dancers may only be selected once for the solo section
- Emerging Choreographers are not eligible to be selected for Minute to Win

SMALL GROUP PERFORMANCE PIECES
- All dancers are eligible to be selected by Choreographers for their select small group
- Choreographers will select a minimum of 6 dancers per group
- Groups can consist of a mix of Junior and Senior dancers
Rehearsal
- If dancers are selected for the small group performance piece they will have a 2 hour rehearsal period with the Choreographer at the end of day 1.
- Dancers must be available for the full rehearsal time
Performance Requirements
- All dancers must wear all black attire or as specified by the choreographer (will be pieces you already have)
- Dancers must be performance ready following rehearsal
Eligibility
- Dancers selected for solos are still eligible to be selected for small group performances
DANCE STUDIO PERFORMANCE OPPORTUNITY
Raise the Barre is all about celebrating Perth’s dance talent. We invite studios to take the stage, showcase their groups, and be part of an exciting performance evening.
- Dance studios and dancers may register to perform free of charge
- Each studio may enter performance pieces for the showcase – any selected theatrical genre (no classical ballet items)
Studio Awards
Cash Prizes will be awarded to studios! Our Workshop panel members will select studios to receive the awards:
2 x $500 Creative Impact Awards
2 x $1000 Standout Performance Awards
EMERGING CHOREOGRAPHER ARTIST
In alignment with our Raise the Barre vision – providing dancers with opportunities that assist in progressing their dance career, 4 Workshop Choreography positions will be available for emerging Choreographers.
- 4 positions available for Perth-based emerging choreographers (16+ years), Professional choreographers or teachers are not permitted to enter.
- Entry via a live audition process
- Selected by a panel of Perth industry professionals

Selected Choreographers Will:
- Teach paid workshops to either Juniors or Seniors
- Choreograph a small group performance piece, rehearsed outside of the Convention
- Choreographers can select any dancers they wish and there is no
Awards
- The emerging choreographers will receive cash prizes
- 2 x $500 Emerging Choreographer Artist
- 2x $250 Emerging Choreographer Artist
These will be awarded by the panel on the performance evening.
TICKETING
- 2-Day Convention Pass: $279 per person
- Performance Evening Tickets: $50 per person
- Workshops will be open to parents and teachers to watch with a $60 Day Pass
CANTEEN
- Our canteen will be open for the duration of the Convention and performance
GENERAL RULES & CONDITIONS
- All participants must follow event schedules and instructions
- Respectful behaviour is expected at all times
- Raise the Barre reserves the right to make changes to schedules, choreographers and programming if required
- Tickets are non-refundable, but transferrable to another dancer
- Photography and videography will occur throughout the event
- There will be not videography on the Performance Evening and parents are welcome to film your own studio or
